Essex's fire service is at the centre of a major police investigation.

In a statement to Heart, a spokesperson for the Essex County Fire and Rescue Service: "During an internal investigation, senior managers at ECFRS were made aware of allegations of potential criminal activity within the Service.

"These matters were alleged to have happened some time ago, but due to their serious nature and following clear legal advice, managers referred the matter to Essex Police.

"Since then, the Service has been co-operating fully with the Police inquiry and has advised staff to do the same.

"While this investigation continues, it would be inappropriate for us to comment further."

A spokesperson from Essex Police said: "Following a referral by the Essex County Fire and Rescue Service, the Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate is conducting a criminal investigation into historic allegations of serious criminal offences within ECFRS.

"A number of people have been spoken to by police but at this time no-one has been arrested.

"The investigation is ongoing and we would not wish to comment further at this sensitive stage of the investigation.

"If anyone has any information which they feel may assist the police in this matter they are asked to cintact the Harlow Major Crime Team on 01279 621802."
