An Essex Police officer has been injured after he was knocked off his motorbike by a car he had stopped on the A13 in Thurrock.

The officer had flagged down a car suspected of speeding near Aveley at around 2pm yesterday.

He was leading the vehicle up a slip road at Ferry Lane, then it hit the rear of the motorbike flinging the officer into the path of another vehicle which had to brake hard to avoid him.

The car - a BMW - then drove off but heat a wall near the Ferry Lane roundabout. The driver then ran off but, following a search involving a dog unit and police helicopter, he was arrested. Police say they also found a knife.

An 18 year-old man from Grays was arrested on suspicion of attempted GBH with intent, dangerous driving, theft of a vehicle and possessing an offensive weapon.

The officer was taken to hospital and treated for "slight injuries".
