Southend: 90% Of New Jobs Go To Essex People

26 June 2013, 00:00

90% of new jobs at Southend Airport in the last year have gone to people living in Essex.

A report on the airport's performance over the last 12 months has been released and also shows most of the vacancies have gone to those living in the 'SS' postcode area.

In total, the airport says there are now 500 more people working there than in Summer 2011.

Managing Director, Alistair Welch, has told Heart it is something that has been important to them: "Every airport essentially has a character.

"The airport character here in Southend is really one of people who are friendly who have that local interest and passion for their local airport and they want that to rub off on the passengers.

"Right through its life Southend Airport has been in the conabation of Southend and Rochford. As an airport that really supports and serves the community, it's really good that people who live locally can take advantage of jobs at the airport."

Councillor Nigel Holdcroft, Leader of Southend-on-Sea Borough Council, says: "Over the last couple of years we have witnessed a complete transformation of London Southend Airport, with a huge increase in the number of jobs, flights and the swift delivery of £100m worth of major infrastructure schemes.

"I'm delighted to see that this hugely important element of our local economy has achieved this balance and there is no doubt that nationally, as well as locally, London Southend Airport continues to be a great success story and a significant boost to both the local and regional economy."

Councillor Terry Cutmore, Leader of Rochford District Council, said: "The regeneration and economic growth in the south east of Essex is enhanced by the airport owner's investment and growth strategy and the airport continues to serve our community both with much improved travel facilities and the provision of many new jobs."
