Two University students were treated in hospital after a knife was used in a fight.

The brawl broke out between the pair close to the Learning Resources Centre on the de Havilland Campus at Hertfordshire University in Hatfield on Monday evening.

A third student became involved when he tried to break the fight up.

Both students involved in the fight were taken to the QE2 Hospital in Welwyn Garden City with stab wounds. Their injuries are not life-threatening.

One of the two, who is aged 21 and from Hatfield, is under arrest.

Herts police recovered a knife from the scene. They are appealing for witnesses.

Detective Inspector Robin Winder said: "The incident occurred in a fairly busy area of the University Campus and I would be keen to speak with anyone who believes they witnessed what happened or has any information about it to contact police at the earliest opportunity."

A spokesperson at the University said: "The police are investigating the incident thoroughly and the University will work closely with them to support the investigation. Incidents of this kind are not tolerated on campus.  The University’s priority is student safety and we will not permit the actions of a small number of students to impact upon our wider student community.  Any student found to be involved will be immediately expelled from the University."
