Student protests turn violent

A huge protest by thousands of mainly students has turned violent in central London after hundreds smashed their way into the Tory Party HQ.

They broke into Millbank Tower next to the River Thames in Westminster breaking windows and pelting police with bricks and fireworks.

One protester threw a fire extinguisher from the roof.

A number of arrests have been made and at least seven officers are in hospital.

The country's most senior police officer Sir Paul Stephenson says those caught will face the full force of the law.

Up to 50,000 protesters had been marching earlier demonstrating at plans to raise university tuition fees.
