Around fifty firefighters were called to a fire at a church in the centre of Ipswich late last night.
The fire broke out just after 21:30 at St Michaels Church on Upper Orwell Street and fire crews from Woodbridge, Holbrook, Felixstowe and Needham Market were all called to the scene.
People had to be evacuated from the surrounding area as it was thought the building could collapse.
Fire crews managed to put the fire out by around 00:30 and relief crews worked for another two hours.
Upper Orwell Street had to be closed in both directions between Eagle Street and St Helens Street and it is expected to be closed for the rest of the day.
Investigations are now taking place.
