Officers say a substantial amount of cash was taken from the Norwich and Peterborough between 4 o'clock and 5.30 pm on Friday afternoon after a man walked in a demanded money from the cashiers - he was hiding a weapon inside a bag.

The robber, who had a dark complexion, was wearing a grey or green coat with epaulettes on the shoulders and  had a black hood over a pale blue beanie hat.

Detective Sergeant Steve Knubley of Spalding Police says there were lots of people around the Sheep Market area at the time: “I am keen to hear from anyone who saw a similar man hanging around prior to going into the Building Society or saw him walking off afterwards.

This kind of offence is extremely rare in the Spalding area and the staff who were threatened by the man were shocked but not physically harmed by the man. I urge anyone who thinks they may have seen anything to contact me in the strictest confidence."

DS Steve Knubley can be contacted in confidence on either 0300 111 333 and ask for his extension or dial 01775 722233.
