Fire Crews Investigate Suspicious Substance At West Quay

Hampshire Fire and Rescue crews have been called to investigate a bag containing a white substance at West Quay Shopping Centre in Southampton.

The Service's Hazardous Material (Hazmat) team were called to the centre on Western Esplanade in the City Centre at 8:56 on Tuesday 2 July.

A bag containing 3kg of a white substance was found by a member of West Quay staff in the service area of the shopping centre. Following testing by the Hazmat team, this substance has been confirmed as non-hazardous.

Group Manager Stew Adamson said:

"West Quay staff acted upon their emergency procedures plan and alerted the emergency services as soon as they found the unidentified substance.

"During this incident we worked closely with Hampshire Constabulary and South Central Ambulance Service to ensure the safety of the public while the investigation was in progress."

Crews have now stood down and left the scene
