Fire Destroys Southampton Car Wash
An investigation's continuing into a fire which burnt down a hand car wash in Southampton.
Police were called to the St Marys area of the city at 5.40am on Saturday May 21st. Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service had six pumps in attendance to bring the fire under control.
The fire originated on the premises of a hand car wash business off Kingsway and spread to the adjoining residential properties situated to the rear in St Marys Street.
Approximately 20 to 30 residents from the adjoining properties were
evacuated to nearby St Marys primary school while the fire was brought under control.
Ty Whitlock from Hampshire Fire & Rescue said:
"On arrival, the initial crews were faced with a very large fire in a large building with a large amount of smoke.
"Due to the swift action and coordinated approach the crews were able to prevent any significant spread to nearby shops, flats and other businesses.
"In a relatively short period of time, Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service were able to liaise with the police and stall holders to ensure business continuity at Southampton's largest market place.
"This would have no doubt been a much more serious incident had it not been for everyone's hard work."
Most residents have been allowed back to their properties. However, two flats situated in St Marys Street have become uninhabitable, and residents will not be able to return.
Police are working with Hampshire Fire & Rescure Service to determine the cause of the fire, the circumstances of which are not known yet.
Anyone with any information is urged to contact CID at Southampton Central police station quoting Operation CRAIGSIDE by calling 101. Alternatively information can be passed on anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
