An elderly man has died in hospital, after being hit by a bus in Totton.
It happened on the A35 approach, close to the Rushington Roundabout, Totton yesterday morning (Thursday 11 September).
George Ackrill, 83, from Dibden Purlieu, sustained head injuries in the collision and died last night at Southampton General Hospital.
The bus driver, a 41-year-old woman from Totton, was arrested in connection with this incident yesterday afternoon. She has been bailed until 16 January 2015, pending further enquiries.
Officers from Hampshire Constabulary’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit are today appealing for witnesses to the incident to come forward. They are especially keen to speak to a number of people who wrote witness accounts on the website of the Daily Echo newspaper yesterday afternoon.
Sergeant Adrienne Jerram, senior investigating officer, said:
“We especially need to speak to everybody on the bus because we think that some passengers got the off the bus before we arrived at the scene.
“We are also keen to talk to any other pedestrians and road users who were in the area and witnessed this. From looking at social media and online comments pages, we know there are people that witnessed this collision but haven’t spoken to us yet. If you are one of them, please call us as soon as possible because any information you can provide could be vital.”
Anyone with information is urged to call 101 and ask for the Serious Collision Investigation Unit at Eastleigh Police Station, quoting Operation Sykes.
