Suffolk: Summer of Sport Launched
16 May 2012, 06:00
A co-ordinated campaign highlighting dozens of sporting opportunities taking place in Suffolk this summer for young people inspired by the London 2012 Games has been launched today.
The Suffolk Summer of Sport aims to bring together sporting opportunities taking place over the summer under one banner to make it easy for young people to take part in sport.
Activities on offer are wide and varied and currently include athletics, cricket, equestrian, golf, gymnastics, judo, multi-sports, orienteering, rugby, swimming, table-tennis and tennis.
From mid June young people will be encouraged to visit the Suffolk Summer of Sport website to choose from the activities on offer and follow in the footsteps of this summer's sporting heroes.
Cllr Kathy Gosling, Suffolk County Council's Portfolio Holder for Sport, Culture, Diversity, Health & Wellbeing, said "The purpose of this campaign is to help turn some of the enthusiasm for sport that will inevitably be created amongst young people by the London 2012 Games in to long term participation in sport. By doing so I hope it will contribute to our collective ambition of Suffolk becoming the most active county in England."
The campaign was launched today to coincide with UK Inspire Day which celebrates hundreds of projects inspired by the London 2012 Games to do something special in their local community.
The Suffolk Summer of Sport is the latest of 23 Suffolk projects to have been awarded the London 2012 Inspire mark recognising it as an exceptional and innovative project inspired by the Games.
Jonathan Edwards, Deputy Chair of the London 2012 Nations and Regions group said: "The Inspire programme is an Olympic and Paralympic first and projects like the Suffolk Summer of Sport will go down in the history books as one of the fantastic projects that used the power of the 2012 Games to inspire a generation."
Despite more than 50 organisations already offering activities as part of the Suffolk Summer of Sport organisers have issued a call to any sports club or organisation not yet involved to sign up and help Suffolk young people to choose sport.
