A Brighton man is due to appear in court charged with the murder of a prostitute whose strangled body was found in a burned-out flat.

Firefighters discovered 29-year-old Andrea Waddell's body in her first floor flat in Upper Lewes Road, Brighton, shortly before midnight on October 15 last year.

Neil McMillan, 42, a satellite installer, of Bennett Road, is also charged with arson with intent to endanger life.

Following her death Ms Waddell's family revealed she was born Alexander John, but underwent gender surgery to become a woman while studying for a master's degree at the University of Sussex.

McMillan, who is in custody, will appear at Lewes Crown Court for a plea and case management hearing from 2pm.
