Thames Valley: 255 Guns Handed In During Firearms Surrender
Thames Valley Police finished two-week Hand in the Gun, force wide firearms and ammunition surrender yesterday (7/12) at 10pm.
The surrender saw a total of 255 firearms handed to police collectively.
Members of the public were able to surrender firearms and ammunition during this time without fear of being prosecuted for holding them without a licence.
The breakdown of results by station:
Abingdon police station - 60
Slough police station - 6
Maidenhead police station - 35
Newbury police station - 32
Oxford police station - 9
High Wycombe police station - 26
Reading police station - 11
Banbury police station - 16
Loddon Valley police station - 21
Milton Keynes police station - 22
Aylesbury police station - 17
Police have also received 127 lots of ammunition and a grenade.
The grenade was a pre-war training grenade handed in at Abingdon police station which has been collected by trained bomb disposal officers to dispose of.
Weapons handed in to front counters will now be forensically examined and information sent to National Ballistics Intelligence Service (NABIS) where appropriate.
Leading the campaign, Ch Insp Lindsay James said:
“We have been extremely pleased with the number of firearms and ammunition handed in and consider the surrender to have been a great success. I would like to thank the public for the excellent response.
“Every weapon handed in is now one less that could have ended up in the wrong hands, making the Thames Valley a safer place to live.”
