A decade of war with Afghanistan is a land mark in time but Tony Phillippson will always remember the 11th June 2006 when his son was killed in action.
James Philippson was 29 years old when he was killed. He was from Seven Parachute Regiment Royal Horse Artillery and was the first British soldier to be killed in Helmand Province, Southern Afghanistan.
James's father, Tony said James was always destine to be in the army: "He would wear camouflage pyjamas as a child and had pictures of guns and soldiers on his bedroom wall".
The last five years Tony has had a battle of his own. The coroner reported the cause of James’s death was a Lack of Mission Essential Equipment. Tony has since been having words with the Ministry of Defence to try and make sure more lives are not lost for this reason.
There are now plans to withdraw British troops from Afghanistan in 2015. Tony Philippson hopes more can be done in the next three years to reduce the number of casualties.
James's family and friends have set up The Captain James Philippson Trust Fund and website to try to give some value and benefit to the tragedy of his death.
