A brave passer by who went to the aid of a woman as two men tried to steal her £17,000 ring received a commendation from the High Sheriff of Hertforshire yesterday (Wednesday March 16th).
John Hamperl heard Muriel Feldman scream out when she was grabbed on the driveway of her home in Lower Paddock Road in Watford.
Mrs Feldman, 62, had been targeted by two men who had followed her from shops in Radlett on 2 October 2009 after they had spotted her expensive ring.
At an award ceremony at St Albans crown court Judge Martin Griffith said Mr Hamperl had seen the two men "mooching around." When he saw them pounce on Mrs Feldman he ran down her drive shouting at the men.
They fled without the ring, escaping with her pink handbag. Mr Hamperl returned and comforted the victim.
One of the men was jailed for 2 and a half years after his DNA was found on the mouth of the victim.
Judge Griffith said: "It was a very brave thing to do in the circumstances."
