Council Spends £30,000 On Awards

It's been revealed Hertfordshire County Council spent more than £30,000 of taxpayers' money last year on awards ceremonies.

It puts the local authority sixth in a list for the amount spent on ceremonies.  The research by the Taxpayers' Alliance has found some local authorities didn't spend anything on them last year.

Heart's been told the cash spent in Hertfordshire was used to help recognise people who have worked in the public sector for many years.

Herts County Council's Deputy Leader David Lloyd thinks the money was well spent.  "We have really dedicated teachers, social workers, firefighters and this is just a small reward for the long service they've given to the people of Hertfordshire," he said.

He's also defended spending so much money when some councils didn't spend anything.

"Some councils don't have the very good relations that we do with our staff and I think most people would accept that a firefighter who's been cutting people out of cars for thirty years probably needs to have some reward just to say thank you for what you've done."
