Distinctive Chain Stolen From Pensioner

Police are appealing for information and witnesses about a theft in St Albans on Friday (August 19).

It happened at about 9.30am on Hatfield Road in the city. A man in his 70s was in his car when he was approached by two women, who tapped on the car window.

One asked for directions to the hospital, but while he was giving directions the other woman reached through the window and grabbed a gold chain from round his neck. She pulled it off and they made off towards Morrisons supermarket.

The stolen necklace has a distinctive gold rope chain with a medallion on it picturing Lord Krishna.

The suspects are described as white, of medium build and it is believed they spoke with Eastern European accents. One was aged 35 and one 25, and they both wore white headscarves. The 35 year-old woman also had two distinctive gold teeth – one in the top of her mouth and one in the bottom.

PC Chris Chadwick, investigating from St Albans Local Crime Unit, said: “This was a callous theft where two individuals took advantage of the victim’s kind nature to steal his necklace by deception.

“I would like to appeal to anyone who saw the two women approach the car or making off after the incident to contact me.

“Alternatively, if someone had tried to offer you the distinctive gold chain, I would also like to hear from you.”

Anyone with information should ring PC Chadwick via the non-emergency number 101, citing crime reference number F1/11/3186. Alternatively, call Crimestoppers (an independent charity) anonymously on 0800 555111.
