Students raise thousands for charity
Teams of students from St Albans and Harpenden have raised more than £15,000 for local charities.
The fundraising challenge started five months ago, when each team was given £100, to turn in to as much cash as possible.
With the help of local business mentors, the teams came up with ideas including holding an African themed dinner, making and selling Christmas cards and selling handbags on a market stall.
On Wednesday evening, the final teams lined up in front of a panel of business, charity and industry experts at Hertfordshire University to present their results.
The winning team - who managed to raise £2,676 for Home-Start St Albans - came from St Albans Girls School. Their activities included making and selling flower arrangements, as well as organising raffles. The four girls on the team also won the award for the Best Charity Awareness Campaign.
Other awards were given out on the evening for the Most Innovative Fundraising Idea, Best Presentation and Best Poster.
Julie Newlan - the Pro Vice Chancellor and Dean of the Business School at University of Hertfordshire said:
“To raise almost £16,000 for very worthy causes is a tremendous achievement and we were all extremely impressed by the enthusiasm, innovation, business sense and sheer hard work displayed by all the teams.”
"The students all had a real taste of dealing with planning, finance, marketing, sales and presenting with expert guidance and support from their Dragons and we can feel confident that there is a new generation of entrepreneurs lining up to be the business leaders of the future.”
Other charities that benefited from the project included Herts Society for the Blind, St Albans City Youth and St Albans Bereavement Network.
