An important milestone was reached this week when work commenced at Watford's new market site.
A smart new illuminated brick footpath, enabling shoppers to quickly and conveniently reach the market from Beechen Grove and Clarendon Road, is being built, just one of several areas of work that is being undertaken before the main contractors begin on site at the beginning of April. The contractors have now been confirmed as TSP, a local company based in Hatfield.
Elected Mayor, Dorothy Thornhill told Heart: "It's great news that work has finally started, and excitement is growing ahead of the main construction commencing. As well as the pathway, new lighting and railings are being installed and trees planted.
This will compliment the work to clean and enhance the flyover by the Parade and will help ensure that our new market becomes an important part of the town centre.
The council is creating a modern market that will look and feel different to the existing market. The current market has been losing business for years and the Charter Place building it is housed in is uneconomical to maintain. For the market to survive we need to make sure that we have an exciting, fit for purpose retail environment for traders and shoppers alike."
Watford Market, will open in September this year, moving to a fully covered, purpose-built- two story market next to the former TJ Hughes building that will be open five days a week.
The upper floor will be a stylish food court, with a variety of hot and cold refreshments to enjoy.
The individual units within the new market will be professionally adapted containers.
