Festival celebrates life of Mark Speight
The legacy of TV presenter Mark Speight is going to be celebrated with a 4 week festival in Wolverhampton.
The 'Taking Mark Home' project comes 4 years after the 'Smart' presenter's death. The project will give young people from local schools the chance to explore dance, drama, painting and sculpture.
The festival is being run in partnership with 'Speight of the Art' - The Mark Speight foundation which was set up by Mark's dad Oliver.
Activities will include workshops on Portraits, Print making, collagraphic art, silk painting and animation. The work produced will be showcased on an exhibition day at Wolverhampton Art Gallery on Saturday the 13th of October.
Oliver Speight said 'The day Mark died prompted 25,000 emails of condolence and 95 thousand hits on YouTube - that reaction determined my future and I did not realise the impact it would have on my own life. Since we set up the foundation we have visited nearly 9,500 children throughout the UK and offered them artistic and creative expertise. I had the desire from day one that at some point in the future I wanted to return Marks work to it's roots in Wolverhampton where he was born and raised. Thanks to Wolverhampton Art Gallery this wonderful opportunity has presented itself.'
