Birmingham's New Library gets topped out

The Library of Birmingham celebrated a Topping Out Ceremony today, by pouring the final section of concrete into place to mark the construction reaching the highest point of the new building, on the tenth floor.

libraryGiles Taylor, a member of the Company of the Birmingham Repertory Theatre's been introducing the ceremony with a reading of Shakespeare - as that room at the top of the building will become the Shakespeare room when it opens.

mikeCouncillor Mike Whitby, Leader of Birmingham City Council, has been laying the last piece of concrete and says he's excited about the hundreds of jobs the library has created.

The £188.8 million building - which will also feature a gallery and theatre, as well as a library - is due to be finished in April 2013 and due to open in July 2013.
