Overall Swindon is above the national average for the number of people on their bikes. 5% of the population here already do it, that's compared with 3% nationally.

But Heart's found out national stats show 3.5% of women aged between 70-74 now cycle compared to 1.4% of 16-19 year olds.

Work's now underway to get more local schools actively promoting cycling. 16 are already signed up to the national Bike It scheme.

All this week is Bike Week and organisers see it as a fantastic opportunity for them to demonstrate what Swindon and Wiltshire has to offer in the way of cycling.

There's a wide range of activities on offer such as gentle commutes and family leisure riding to BMX tricks and mountain biking. There's courses for beginner’s, demonstration days, commuter route planning, bike maintenance and leisurely guided rides too.
