Miracle Recovery Of North Devon Toddler

In a split second the life of the Downings from North Devon were turned upside down on Christmas Day 2010.

About quarter to eleven in the morning their son 4year old eden came running down the stairs saying that his brother Freddie had fallen out of the bedroom window.

Within minutes the Devon Air Ambulance had arrived and took Freddie with mum Andrea to Plymouth's Derriford hospital, a journey that by land can take 90 minutes by air Freddie was being treated within 30 minutes.

They were rushed through A&E but it became apparent that Freddie has suffered a seizure as wells as a fractured skull - he needed to be transferred to Frenchay Hospital in Bristol.

With the North Devon air ambulance now deployed elsewhere, it was the Exeter based crew that flew to the rescue.

By 3pm on Christmas Day Freddie was in Bristol having major head surgery.

On January 12th he was discharged from hospital and seems to be non the worse for his ordeal.

The Downings would like to thank the village which pulled together for the family after the tragedy and are now planning a range of fundraising activities to raise money for Devon Air Ambulance.
