Police are trying to work out how a man's body came to be found in the River Great Ouse in Bedford on New Year's Day.
The alarm was raised by a member of the public who saw the body from The Embankment, close to Shaftesbury Road, in the early afternoon of Tuesday 1 January 2013.
Emergency crews were called to scene and the body was retrieved from the water at 2.30pm.
The man has not yet been formally identified, but Bedfordshire Police say they believe they know who he is.
A post mortem examination is to be carried out to establish the cause of death.
A spokesperson for Bedfordshire Police said: "There is no indication at this stage as to how he came to be in the river."
