Bowel and Breast Cancer Unit Opens at Bedford Hospital

TV personality and bowel cancer campaigner, Lynn Faulds Wood has opened Bedford Hospital's new breast and bowel cancer centre.

Bedford Hospital's dedicated breast and bowel cancer centre has been created to offer patients a 'one stop' service. The purpose built centre contains diagnostic and clinical facilities so patients with suspected breast or bowel cancer can have tests, results and consultations in the same place and in many cases, on the same day.

The new centre will not only make the service more efficient and convenient, it will also create extra capacity which will reduce waiting times for patients.

Mr Michael Callam, consultant general surgeon and clinical lead for breast surgery at Bedford Hospital said: "Early recognition and diagnosis of breast and bowel cancer is fundamental to successful treatment. The new centre will enable patients who have been referred to the hospital with suspected cancer to have rapid access to diagnostic tests, results and consultations so treatment can begin as soon as possible."

Lynn Faulds Wood, bowel cancer campaigner said: "I am delighted to be opening Bedford Hospital's breast and bowel cancer centre. Being told you have suspected bowel cancer is a worrying time. It is therefore wonderful news that patients will have access to a new, dedicated centre, offering a fast and convenient diagnostic service."
