A 75 year old man needs plastic surgery to his hand after a random dog attack in Bedford at the weekend.

He was walking in Priory Marina Country Park with his wife at about 2.40pm on Saturday when a black dog, who appeared to be unsupervised at the time, jumped up and bit him on the hand. The bite has caused severe puncture wounds to his hand.

The owner of the animal was nowhere to be seen and despite an extensive police search with police dogs, the helicopter and officers it couldn't be found. The dog is described as knee high with medium length black hair.

Sergeant Andy Withey said: “The victim has suffered very nasty injuries from this dog, and our concern at the time was whether other members of the public were also at risk. An extensive search of the park was carried out but the owner could not be traced. If anyone was in the park on Saturday or knows who the owner is then please contact the police as a matter of urgency. It is possible the owner is unaware of what happened so we urge them to get in touch.”

Anyone with information about the incident should contact Sgt Withey on 101 or call Crimestoppers, anonymously on 0800 555 111.
