Embankment To Be Resurfaced

The Embankment in Bedford is to be completely resurfaced after dozens of potholes appeared in the road following the recent freezing weather.

The work will begin on Sunday and is expected to take just over 2 weeks (13 working days) to complete.  It will extend from the car park of the Swan Hotel to Newnham Avenue.

The carriageway will be planed to a depth of 100mm and a new binder and surface course will be laid.  The road will be closed between 7am and 7pm on weekdays and between 8am and 6pm on Sunday 14th March.

A full diversion route along Newnham Road, Castle Road and Newnham Avenue will be in place.

Councillor Charles Royden, Portfolio Holder for the Environment, said: "The dreadful winter weather has been extremely damaging for our local roads but we are taking positive action to address the problems.

"The Embankment is being resurfaced as part of the wider programme of works that has taken place thanks to the extra £1million we put in this year’s budget.

"We are also investing around £6million in the coming year to continue the fight back against the backlog of repairs.

"As with all unavoidable road closures, unfortunately the works on The Embankment will cause temporary inconvenience and I would ask drivers to avoid the area if possible. If not, please leave extra time for your journey whilst we carry out these vital works."

Here's what you've been telling us:

"Its needed as the road is in a terrible state.  But the road being closed will cause a traffic nighmare.  The problem is that most of the roads you would go down to avoid the embankment are either shut or restricted - a little bit better planning is needed" Andrew Joy
