School Evacuated After Gas Leak

A school, and nearby properties and businesses in Bedford, had to be evacuated last night after a car came off the road and damaged a gas main.

Emergency services were called to the accident, near Bedford Modern School, at around 7:30pm.

Fire fighters used an “explosimeter” which measures gas in the air. Because of the amount of gas released a decision was made to evacuate the area.

Gas workers had blocked the leak by 10:30pm.

It’s one of two major gas leaks in the town last night.

The second took place at Hammond Road. Fire crews were called to the Elms Farm Industrial estate at around 9:50pm to reports that a lorry had damaged a gas main.

A 500 metre exclusion zone was set up while the area was made safe.
