Seven year old hurt in fall

A 7 year old boy's had to have surgery after falling off a climbing frame and being stabbed by a pencil he had in his pocket.

It happened in a playground at Bedford School on Tuesday 1 March 2011.  The child had to be flown to Addenbrookes Hospital in Cambridge for surgery to remove the pencil.  An air ambulance landed on the school's playing field.

East of England Ambulance Trust Critical Care Paramedic Jemma Varela said: "The Bedfordshire Ambulance crew and officer made a very good decision to wait for help and helicopter transport despite being very close to Bedford hospital in order for this young patient to gain the best possible care.

"I have never known such a young patient to be so brave and remain so calm, especially as we were unable to also transport a parent in the helicopter."
