A video of a convicted burglar has been released to highlight to homeowners the motivation and thinking behind their crimes.
Ever wondered why someone would turn to stealing personal possessions from someone's home, or what ways are best to deter them from targeting your home?
The video has been released by Cambridgeshire Constabulary as part of their Get Closer burglary campaign. A convicted burglar is asked in-depth questions about what items he looks to steal, why he targets certain homes and what would stop him from choosing one house over another.
Currently serving in HMP Peterborough, the burglar explains how it is easy to steal people's possessions because of easily avoidable behaviour such as leaving car keys near the front door and laptops being left in view so they know what is available and where to look.
Crime Reduction Officer, Helen O'Driscoll, who carried out the interview, said: "The interview was an eye-opener but very useful in gaining a better understanding of the thinking and motivations behind why someone burgles.
"It still amazes me how avoidable many of the burglaries are and how simple measures such as keeping your front and back doors locked or moving valuables out of view and can make such a difference. A burglar only needs to spot an open window or an unlocked door or gate to make their move and if you think your security looks poor then so will a burglar.
"It doesn't take much to improve security but it's a worthwhile investment and gives peace of mind"
