A Cambridge man has been jailed after admitting sexually assaulting an eight year old girl.

65 year old Brian Smith, of Whitefriars in Cambridge, abused the girl between June 2008 and August 2009.

At the time he had been entrusted by the victim's mother to look after her daughter.

At Cambridge Crown Court on Friday, Smith pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting the girl on a number of occasions, and was jailed for 15 months.

Alongside his jail term, Smith is also not allowed any unsupervised contact with young people under 16 years old.

DC Jo Crisall, from the child protection unit, said: "This sentence shows how seriously this type of crime is regarded by the courts and I hope other victims of sexual offences are encouraged to come forward.

Smith¿s victim has been extremely brave throughout this ordeal and I hope today's result gives the family some comfort."
