The head teacher of Swavesey Village College has said fifty students who are in storm hit New York are 'safe'.

The year 11 students went to New York on a history trip.

Principal Andy Daly told Heart:

''We have been constant contact with the group, we have a very experienced team leading the group. They have been staying inside their hostel which is in a safe area of the city. They have been there for the last 36 hours and have stocked up on food and water. We are also in constant contact with parents to reassure them. The group is intending to return on Thursday as planned.''

President Obama has declared a "major disaster" in New York and Long Island after Superstorm Sandy swept across the east coast of America.
