New Jobs for Cornwall

The first wave of twenty new jobs for West Cornwall have been announced.

They're being created by British Gas as recruitment for the Green Deal/ECO (Energy Company Obligation) programme.

The vacancies range from customer advisors to development managers and are the result of negotiations between the Council and British Gas to deliver the Green Deal/ECO in Cornwall.

Through ECO, a £50m fund has been set up to help vulnerable households and older homes where the condition of the property would make installing energy efficiency measures expensive. British Gas has also agreed to help access a further £50m of Green Deal funding.

Both Green Deal and ECO are flagship Government energy efficiency programmes aimed at reducing the amount of energy our homes use and helping us to cut our fuel bills.

“It is fantastic to see British Gas investing in a base in Cornwall and bringing permanent jobs here,” said Councillor Julian German, Cornwall Council portfolio holder for Economy and Culture. “This is the first wave of what we hope will be around 40 jobs based in Cornwall, with around another 100 being either created or supported in the Green Deal and ECO assessment and installation sectors. British Gas has also committed to ensure that 60% of the Green Deal installations will be undertaken by local small and medium sized companies, setting the foundations for further stimulus to the local economy.”

Stuart Margerrison, Director of Fuel Poverty at British Gas, said “British Gas is delighted to be mobilising this innovative Green Deal/ECO scheme in partnership with Cornwall Council. We have many exciting job opportunities available and look forward to hiring some great local talent to help us reduce energy bills and make heating more affordable for thousands of homes in Cornwall.”
