South Coast Lecturers Go On Strike
Lecturers at around 500 universities and colleges, including here on the South Coast are taking part in their first nationwide strike for five years.
Tens of thousands of members of the University and College Union will mount picket lines in Bournemouth, Portsmouth, Winchester and Southampton, as well as places like Cardiff, Glasgow, Oxford, Liverpool, Manchester and London.
The row's about pay and pensions.
Meanwhile Unite, Unison and other trade unions, are also staging a major demonstration in Southampton against the city council's imposed pay cuts of up to 24 per cent for all employees (excluding school support staff).
A march is taking place from Hoglands Park (Speakers Corner, near Debenhams) at 12.30pm, to the Civic Centre.
