Speed Limit Cut On Busy Road

Drivers in Dorset are being warned of a new speed limit coming into force today (Friday, January 21st) on one of the county's busiest roads.

The Dorset Way has been reduced from 70 to 50, it’s after 9 people were killed or seriously injured there in the last 3 years, including 2 deaths last year.

Steve Tite, from Poole Borough Council, said:

“I would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused but would ask that drivers bear with us while the works are being carried out.  Changing a large number of speed limit signs on roads such as this takes time and unfortunately this has led to some confusion.

If we were to put up a completely new set of signs before removing the old this would require further lane closures, resulting in increased traffic disruption. The fact that there have been two fatalities on this road since these limits were first considered shows the lower limits are needed.”

Work is due to be completed by 21st January 2011.
