Student Protests On The South Coast

Thousands of students in Bournemouth, Southampton and Winchester have been staging marches and rallies today (Nov 24th) over plans to increase tuition fees.

In Bournemouth, hundreds of students marched from Meyrick Park to the town hall earlier - they broke through police barriers outside and walked along the road stopping traffic - no-one was arrested though.

Elsewhere thousands gathered in central London - they were penned in by riot quad officers at Whitehall - a police van was attacked and one officer's arm was broken.

15 people have now been arrested, eight on suspicion of violent disorder, theft and criminal damage.

Four were arrested on suspicion of public order offences, one for burglary and two on suspicion of violent disorder.
