A reward of up to £5000 has been put up for help tracing thieves who tried to steal a cashpoint from a newsagent's in Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire.

The money's been put up by Crimestoppers and the cash machine network LINK.  It's for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for the attempted robbery in the early hours of Wednesday 18 April 2012.

Thieves used a forklift truck to attempt to remove an ATM machine from Huttons Newsagents in Marsden Road.

Although they didn't succeed in stealing the cash machine, considerable damage was caused to the shop’s shutters, canopy and windows with damage also left on the machine itself.

Graham Mott, from LINK, said: "We’re urging the public to come forward with any information that they may have about this cash machine crime. Even something that may sound insignificant could be part of a bigger picture and prove invaluable in convicting someone involved."

Crimestoppers Regional Manager for the East of England, Ann Scott, added: “This was a selfish crime which has left the owners of this local corner shop with several thousands of pounds worth of damage to their property and the machine through no fault of their own.

"The sheer noise that this attempt would have caused during the early hours of the morning would have been very audible to those living in the surrounding areas of Marsden Road. If you heard or saw anything, please call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or by filling in our secure online form at www.crimestoppers-uk.org. All genuine information is valuable to us”.

Callers to Crimestoppers do not have to give their name or personal details and will not have to give a statement or go to court.

The reward of up to £5,000 is offered to anyone who provides information through the Crimestoppers 0800 555 111 number that leads to the arrest and conviction of the people responsible for the crime.
