A police investigation's underway after an 18 year old suffered several stab wounds in a brawl at a gatecrashed birthday party in Houghton Regis, Bedfordshire.

Trouble broke out when gatecrashers got into the party in Chelsea Gardens at around a 10.15pm on Friday 4 January 2013.

As people left, scuffles broke out and the victim tried to help a friend who was being attacked.  He was struck over the head with a bottle and became embroiled in a fight.

After the attackers had fled, the teenager realised that he had suffered three stab wounds to his shoulder and back. He made his way to the Luton & Dunstable Hospital for treatment before speaking to the police.

Detective Constable Hayley Williams, who is investigating the assault, is keen to speak with anyone who was in Chelsea Gardens at the time of the incident and may have seen the attack taking place.

DC Williams said: "This was a very nasty attack which could have resulted in far more serious injuries than it did. Thankfully the victim has not suffered any lasting damage.

"We have already spoken with a number of witnesses who were invited to the party, but I want to speak with anyone who was in the area and may have seen this vicious assault taking place. The offenders were not afraid to use violence and weapons to cause harm and we must find them as soon as possible to stop them from committing any further offences.

"I'd urge anyone who was in the area at the time of the assault or anyone else who may have information, however small or insignificant they think it is, that could help us with our investigation, to come forward. Don't dismiss your information as unimportant, even tiny details which don't seem relevant now might become useful later on."
