A 47-year-old man from Hemel Hempstead has been charged with trying to smuggle drugs in to the UK.

Adegboyega Ayobami Adeniji os Sandmere Close in the town was arrested after around £1.4 million pounds of drugs were found inside two suitcases at Heathrow Airport. The bags had come off a flight from Amsterdam in to Terminal 5 on the evening of April 4th. Adeniji had been a passenger on the same flight - he's accused of attempting to import controlled drugs.

In total 33 kilos of cocaine, 2 kilos of heroin and 2 kilos of methamphetamines were found. The seizure by the UK Border Agency is one of the biggest of its kind at Heathrow so far this year.

UK Border Agency Heathrow Director Graeme Kyle said:

"This was a significant seizure - one of the biggest that we've had at Heathrow this year.

"As this detection shows, our officers are on constant alert, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to keep class A drugs and other banned substances out of the UK.

"We are determined to prevent this terrible trade which can have such a destructive impact on the lives of so many."
