Colchester Sewage Smell Complaints

Because efforts to fix a bad smell at a sewage works in Essex have not worked, Colchester Council's now issued Anglian Water with a legal notice.

Residents and businesses near to Haven Way have complained about it and the water company has to solve the problem by March 31st 2011 or face a potential £20,000 fine if prosecuted.

The council believe Anglian Water has not ‘demonstrated best practicable means to prevent the excessive odour”, after initial efforts to tackle the problem.

Belinda Pearse, Environmental Control Manager, says: “The council carried out a full investigation into the problem and found that the odour represented a statutory nuisance.”

“Steps taken to address the issue were unsuccessful and the Council was concerned about the ongoing impact on residents of Old Heath, Rowhedge, the Hythe, Greenstead and neighbouring businesses.”
