Essex: Emergency Services Busier Over New Year

Emergency services saw a rise in calls during new year.

Just over 100 people were arrested across Essex, mainly for domestic assaults, neighbour dispute and town centre scuffles.

Police say the rise was due to an increase in alcohol consumption.

50 extra officers were on the streets to deal New Year troubles.

The planned firefighter strike across Essex passed without any major incidents.

Cover crews were called out a total of eight times during the industrial action over pensions.

In Basildon a woman had to be cut free from her car and in Leigh crews dealt with a house fire.

Crews walked out between 18:30 on Tuesday 31st December to 00:30 Wednesday 1st January.
