Harwich: Man Jailed Over Majorca Murder

The family of a Harwich man murdered while on holiday in Majorca have told Heart they are disappointed with the killer's sentence.

42-year-old father-of-one Gary Vigors was stabbed outside a bar in Magaluf two years ago.

His attacker, British holidaymaker Thomas Swannell, was due to stand trial this week but the changed his plea to guilty.

He has already spent two years in custody there so will only serve an additional four years of his six year sentence.

Gary's family found out the news from their solicitor out in Majorca.

His father, David Vigors, told Heart: "We're disappointed with the length of the sentence - it should have been longer.

"If Swannell had admitted murder in a court in Britain he would have been given a minimum term of life in prison."

The court in Palma took into account the fact that Thomas Swannell was drunk at the time and the attack and that he agreed to pay compensation to the Vigor family as mitigating factors.

David added: "Most of the money will be used to set up a trust fund for Gary's daughter and the remainder will cover our legal fees, but it doesn't bring him back.

"Gary was a great guy. He had a great job, stayed out of trouble, and everybody liked him."
