A new generation of wind turbines could be built off the Essex coast after a company applied for planning permission for a test site.

Dong Energy built the offshore wind farm in Clacton - and now want to put up two demonstration turbines at their existing site at Gunfleet Sands.

It's the first time the machines will be seen in the country and although they'll be more powerful, they won't be any bigger.

The planning application's been sent to the Marine Management Organisation, which is consulting with Tendring District Council.

Dong Energy say it'll take the number of turbines at the site to 50.

If the test site is given the go-ahead - building could start by the end of 2011.

If you want to see the plans - information days are being held at libraries in Bishop's Park and Clacton on January 19 and 20.
