Paddle Steamer Marks Pier Reopening
24 September 2011, 01:00
An Essex pier hit by a barge in high winds and heavy swell reopens today (Saturday).
Southend Pier - the world's longest pleasure pier - was hit by a contractor's barge tethered to the structure on September 6th.
A half-mile exclusion zone had been established because of the possibility of debris falling from the damaged area.
The Waverley, which is the only remaining sea-going paddle steamer in the world, will visit Southend to mark the occasion.
There will also be a two-day busking festival which will feature performances from local musicians.
