Southend: Thousands Spent On Torch Relay

Southend Council spent more than £27,000 hosting the Olympic Torch for last year's Games, figures published on the one-year anniversary of the start of the relay show.

In total, the cost to Southend-on-Sea Council was £27,808.88, which funded items such as security and street furniture as well as road-closure notices.

Thurrock Council spent £42,227 while Barking and Dagenham recorded a figure of £57,763 to host the Torch.

Essex County Council did not record any expenditure, saying costs - apart from whatever staff overtime was incurred but not calculable - were met by the district authorities or town councils.
