A new Wilkin and Sons factory in Tiptree has moved a step closer after outline plans were approved.
Colchester Borough Council approved the plans last night (Thursday, April 11).
The project would see a new facility built on Factory Hill with old one demolished and almost 250 homes built on the site, bringing around 200 new jobs to the area.
In a statement, the company - famed for its Tiptree Jam - said: "We could not have reached this stage without the support of the village. Now we must ensure we live up to expectations.
"Intense local scrutiny of our plans has without doubt produced a better solution - the petition including over 6,000 names in support of new homes to enable the factory to be built was the strongest indication possible that there is a place for our business in the village."
