Essex Police have confirmed that an eight-year-old fired a gun which seriously injured a five-year-old boy in Wickford.

Officers were called to a property in Upper Park Road at 1.20pm on Sunday (3 November).

The injured child was taken to the Royal London Hospital with a serious but not life threatening injury.

The gun and other legally held firearms at the property were handed over to officers.

The force has refused to comment on the type of weapon or the relationship between the two children.

It is understood the owners of the property were not at home at the time but were nearby.

He has been released on police bail until January 6 while enquiries continue.
