Local Shops Declare Independents Day

July 4th has been dubbed Independents day by thousands of local shops.

They want  shoppers  to buy at least one item from a local independent retailer and celebrate diversity on the high street. The  day is being supported by shops and towns across the country - many are putting on special events.

Shop owners  say life is especially tough for  the small retailer at the moment. The number of empty shops on British high streets has hit an all-time high this year, as an increasing number of people turn to on-line shopping or  go to supermarkets to avoid paying town centre park parking charges.

But retailers say  there's no substitute for great customer service and the sense of community that comes with shopping close to home.

Our reporter Wendy Buckingham's been talking to Chris Abbott who is the third generation running Abbott's DIY in Ottery St Mary, Devon.  CLICK HERE   Ottery is giving a raffle ticket to every purchasing customer with prizes from the local shops.
