700 of Devon's police officers are to be trained in how to use a taser gun.
325 of the weapons have been delivered here after a 5 year trial which saw them pointed at 132 people, and actually fired 48 times.
Superindendent Ian Curtis says they are only used when its absolutely necessary: "if those officers are presented with violence of such severity that the use of that particular weapon is then justified it is very effective. It does induce an immediate loss of voluntary muscle control."
He continued: "situations where maybe the indivdual has attacked the officers. Those officers responding to incidents of this type of severity will be equipped with this tool"
