M5 Bridge works in Gloucestershire

Road users are advised that the M5 between junctions 11a and 12 will require closures this weekend as part of essential maintenance works at Gloucester Painswick Bridge.

The M5 southbound will be closed between 10pm tonight, Friday, and 6am tomorrow morning, Saturday.

From 10pm on Saturday night the northbound carriageway will be closed, reopening at 6am on Sunday morning.

Clearly signed diversion routes will be in place. The closures are being put in place to allow traffic management to change at Gloucester Painswick Bridge between junctions 11a and 12.

Work started at the bridge in January and is continuing for 15 months. Phase one of the work on the southbound side of the bridge has now been completed.

A contraflow arrangement had been in place since January with two lanes northbound and southbound in operation. Three narrow lanes in both directions with a contraflow arrangement will now be put in place and work will continue on the northbound side of the bridge.

A 50mph speed limit will remain in place for the safety of our workers and road users.

The works at Gloucester Painswick Bridge are part of a comprehensive package of bridge safety improvements and maintenance to benefit road users on the M5 near Gloucester. The works, which will continue until March 2015, are taking place between junctions 10 and 12 and includes a deck replacement, resurfacing and waterproofing on one bridge and strengthening work on the foundations of three other bridges.

Members of the public can find out more about the programme by visiting the Highways Agency website or via the M5 Gloucestershire Bridgeworks Facebook page.
